Ways to be a Greener Rider...
Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing the world at the moment. We have all heard about it and slowly its being brought to the front of peoples minds. But I think, unfortunately not enough focus is put upon it.
“Given the size and tremendous heat capacity of the global oceans, it takes a massive amount of heat energy to raise Earth’s average yearly surface temperature even a small amount. The 2-degree increase in global average surface temperature that has occurred since the pre-industrial era (1880-1900) might seem small, but it means a significant increase in accumulated heat.“
· The extra heat is driving regional and seasonal temperature extremes, reducing snow and sea ice cover.
· Melting glaciers, early snowmelt, and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages and increase the risk of wildfires.
· Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding .
· Forests, farms, and cities will face troublesome new pests, heat waves, heavy downpours and increased flooding. All those factors will damage or destroy agriculture and fisheries.
· Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and Alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction.
· Allergies, asthma and infectious disease outbreaks will become more common due to increased growth of pollen-producing ragweed, higher levels of air pollution and the spread of conditions favorable to pathogens and mosquitoes.
Climate Change is also one of the world’s problems where we as individuals can all help. I know sometimes it’s hard to see how one person can make a difference, but if we all do our part, we can make a difference. On mass, we can have an effect on governmental policy by voting! We can support charities and organisations that do a lot to fight climate change. There is also a lot that individually everyone can be doing.
As winter sport enthusiasts we are not always the most environmentally friendly people. Lots of us are flying all over the world to go ride in different countries. We should also consider the amount of power it takes to run a ski resort that we all like to ride and how that can cause damage to the environment. None of us are perfect and it will be a hard long struggle for us to all be carbon neutral. But below is a list of simple things that everyone can think of doing to help...
